Harper's Speech from the Throne A.K.A. "I Am A Prime Minister King"

I am the Canadian man of the hour,
using all legal means to retain my power,
to manage the great issues of the day
like shafting civil service and equity pay,
and keeping the separatists from the front bench
(or sovereignists as I call them in French),
to deal with the threatening socialist hordes
and keep for myself all patronage rewards.

Make no mistake (and I have made none)
it's time to invest -you'll make a ton!
Some may be worried about affairs of state
Me, I'm happy to just sit and wait!

Though it's time to build trust, and to take the
high road,

I considered my chances, and chose to prorogue!

It is, it is a glorious thing,
to be a laissez faire Prime Minister King!

Yet Another Reason London City Council Is The Equivalent of a Grade 3 Classroom

'A head of lettuce, a pumpkin or that chicken that you ate last night, it collapses unto itself, it decays, it doesn't take up that much space at the landfill.'

I Blame the Parents

As I sit in my parents' house while they are away in Washington, DC I find my attention shifting to their immense cable TV package.

I don't have the ever trite channel "TLC" (which doesn't stand for "Tender Lovin' Care", although I think it should) but for me it's like crack. I love it. I can't stop from flicking over to it every few hours and see what's on.

I find that most of their shows are based on crushing souls. Sometimes it's crushing people's spirits by telling them that they look like shit (What Not To Wear, Ten Years Younger, Big Medicine, Makeover Train, Must Love Kids), or by making you feel bad that you don't cook organically for your family and you only have TWO kids (Jon and Kate Plus Eight), or by crushing the dreams of first time home owners (Property Ladder, Date My House, Flip That House). And of course, my new favourite crazy train, 17 Kids and Counting with the ever-Quiverfull Duggar family.

Since my new obsession is the Duggar family in all of their conservative Baptist craziness, imagine my surprise (and bizarre delight) when back to back episodes aired this evening.

Where do I begin?

There are so many things that make me shake my head at this family.

Let's start with this evening's episode. This evening's show had the Duggars hosting the Bates family from Tennessee, another Quiverfull family, they have 16 kids.

Side note: the Bates found out that number 17 is on it's way via a stop at a gas station.

Apparently this is the Duggars attempt to normalize their huge family (See America! We're not out of our minds! There's another family that's just like us!). Seriously, the families are so alike I can't even tell the moms apart.

Eventually the convo turned to the ever quaint term of "courtship". No dating for the Duggars or the Bates. If you get chosen (or betroved or matched or forced) to be courted, there's no way out. You are getting married. Oh, and the courtship? No contact. Except hand holding. That's it. And to ensure this, every time you go out we're sending one of your siblings to chaparone you. WTF? Chaperone? Bascially the message is, we've sheltered you all your life, kept you away from TV, the Internet and well, we think if you two are alone, well, you'll succumb to your horny temptations. My question would be, since they've been so sheltered, would they even know what to do?

Anyway, during this episode it was a touch obvious that a Duggar/Bates matchmaking effort would not be distasteful for either side.

And I did find out about the clothing situation. Apparently the long skirt/high neck lines are pleasing to God. But I think it's interesting to see that the girls' clothing are obviously hand made, while the boys wear something akin to J. Crew. So, bascially we're enjoying re-enforcing those gender stereotypes in a variety of different ways.

Side note: when the Duggars/Bates went to a Christian theme park the Bates kids were wearing the same outfits as the "pilgrims". You couldn't tell them apart.

And finally (for now) what I find MOST ridiculous about both families is their espousing that there is no TV, no music (even contemporary Christian music is a no-no), no Internet, and no friends who don't share same values.

But do you know what both families do think is an appropriate family activity?

PAINT BALL.

Yes, dressing up in layers (because when the kids are done they are covered in painful bruises), picking up a gun filled with paint pellets and using kids as young as 4 as target practice.

Yeah, nice wholesome family fun.

Am I the only one to see the ridiculous-ness of this? I don't know what to say.

And as the Facebook group I just joined says, "It's A Vagina, Not A Clown Car".

This Is How I Want To Go...

Alright, so there's this guy in Grand Rapids, MI who bowled a perfect (perfect 300!) game of bowling not to long ago.

And right after the high fives, he dies of a massive heart attack right there in the bowling alley.

What?!

Maybe that's how I'd want to go...at least I can reassure myself that it would be a long time from now since at the moment my all time bowling record is a 47.

Check out the story:

Bowler collapses and dies after rolling 300 game

RAVENNA, Mich. (WZZM) - Teammates in his bowling league think after rolling a perfect 300 game Don Doane's heart just gave out.

"You get nervous shooting a 300," says teammate Todd Place. "The pressure keeps building," says bowling alley owner Jim Nutt.

Minutes after achieving the life long goal of a perfect game the 62 year old bowler collapsed and died at Ravenna Bowl in Ravenna. "Don just collapsed," says alley owner Nutt. " At first we thought he just fainted." "Then when I rolled him over I realized it wasn't good," says teammate Place.

The teammates say he was giving a high-five minutes before. They tried to revive him but Doane never spoke another word. He died of what was apparently a massive heart attack "He looked fine, reached across the table and gave me a high-five and he fell over," says Place.

"I think he died by the time he hit the floor." Don Doane was a member of the "Nutt Farm" bowling team at Ravenna Bowl for 45 years. His teammates says its strange not to see him on league nights.

"It was like a book, a final chapter," says Place. "He threw his 300 game with all of his friends, gave each other high-fives and it's like the story ended. He died with a smile on his face."

"Don will be a legend," says Nutt. 'It's something that will never be forgotten as long as people bowl here." Ravenna Bowl is planning a memorial ceremony for Doan's' wife Linda and son Chad.

She Will SLAM DUNK You!

Check out this MASSIVE fight at last night's WNBA game, Detroit vs. L.A.

Will this make the Olympic bid for gold in Women's Basketball a bit tense?

Well, maybe now people will start watching the WNBA...

WHAT IS HAPPENING TO STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE?!

I stumbled across something deeply disturbing today.

Currently I'm going through my own teensy quarter life crisis. When one goes through these types of 'moments' it is not all that unusual to revert back to the good ole days when you felt comforted and safe. For me that means looking for nostalgia, and I have to cross one of my beloved childhood friends off the list. Strawberry Shortcake.

In the day and age where everything has to be hipper and more exciting more and more people/films/television shows are morphing this is almost an inevitability. Why expend some creative energy and make something new when we can destroy a beloved icon for emotionally unstable adults?

Couple that with the gross sexualized images of children (have we all not shuddered when walking past the Bratz dolls display?) and sacred icons of my eighties childhood are ruined...

I may be over reacting, but I really liked her bloomers.

Faith Hill is HUGE!

Faith Hill is going to be on the cover of Redbook...and the cover shot was taken from a photo shot done for a Jezabel Fashions (I don't even know what that is).
The kicker?
They totally photoshopped Faith.
Good thing, she's such fattie.

Look What I Can Do!

Yippee! I can embed YouTube.com videos into my little blog!

I'm getting quite savvy.

My first entry is a parody video of my nemesis, Rachael Ray.

Here are a few reasons I dislike her:

1. Volume: Does this woman have any other volume than off or foghorn level? Seriously, she's way too loud. Her and Ty Pennington should get together and have shouting contests.

2. Intonation: I know voice probably doesn't merit two reasons, but seriously this woman sounds like a strangled goose.

3. Abbreviations: I have not made my dislike of Rachael Ray's abbreviations secret. She calls sandwiches 'sammies'. Who does that? When she says GB I want to throw garbage at her. And stoup has to be the stupidest thing I ever heard of. A stoup being "a cross between a stew and a soup". Stop it! And the most hated: EVOO. Don't know what that means? Don't worry, Rachael will fill you in, Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Tell me, Rachael, what's the point of using an abbreviation if you're going to say what the abbreviation means right afterwards?! You're ridiculous!

4. Herbs: Ok, please stop telling me to wash my herbs and put them in plastic bags when I get home from the store. Normal people don't have time for that shit.

5. 30 Minutes in Rachael Ray World = 45 Minutes In The Real World: Her meals are NOT 30 minute meals. That's a lie.

6. Dessert: Rachael readily admits that she's no baker. Yeah, thanks for the head's up. I think we understood that when we saw you make the 'melted ice cream sauce'. Seriously.

7. Recipe Titles: "You Won't Be Single For Long Vodka Cream Pasta". That's not clever. Or catchy. It's pathetic.

8. She Laughs At Her Own Jokes: Basically that. Couple that with numbers 1 and 2, and you've got an all out assault on the nation's ears.

9. Her "Talent": Can someone please tell the woman that carrying 15 items from the pantry to the cutting board is NOT a talent. It's a stupid way of tricking us to think that she's getting shit done faster.

10. Garbage Bowl: Incredibly wasteful. Also, see #3.

11. Pet Food: She teaches how to make dishes for your diabetic, overweight pets. Personally some of the stuff she makes I wouldn't serve to a dog.

12. Tag Line: Yum-O is not a tag line or a catchphrase. It's stupid. Stop putting it on t-shirts.

13. Eating Noises: Someone forwarded a video from YouTube.com of Rachael Ray making eating noises. It was 3 minutes long. I threw up in my mouth a little at 1 minute 23 seconds.

14. Oprah: Because of Oprah, now this woman has her own freaking show.

Respondents Welcome On Vicarious Traveller!

Guess what? I finally took some time to look around my blogger and now I removed settings for comments on my blog.
So now anyone can leave a comment on my beautiful blog.
So now if I don't get comments I'll look like a big dork.
And coupled with the counter I just put on my blog I'm seriously looking desperate.

A Public Service

This Is Ronnie James Dio, for those of you who didn't know.
And he's ancient. And tiny.
And now that I know that he is the singer who replaced Ozzy Osborne for Black Sabbath so much makes sense...stay tuned.

I Love Her But...

Would you want this hurtling towards you and your brand new camera phone?
I barely had time to retreat.
This is Rachel Zoe. She's awesome, and probably the most adorable kid ever. Especially when she tells you that you're beautiful (unless you wear your hair in a ponytail, then unfortunately, you are no longer a girl - I believe 3 years old is when you start defining gender).
Rachel and I spent the weekend together and I learned a lot. Mainly what I learned was that I, indeed, do not want children.
She great, don't get me wrong. But she's very...busy.
I turned my back for 24.3 seconds and in that time she successful painted her entire arm in finger paint. A think coating. And cleaning her off was no walk in the park.
Speaking of which, she doesn't do that, walking in parks. After a solid 20 minutes of playing (consisting of me climbing around with her) she requests being carried home. And of course I oblige because I'm a sucker.
At the end of the weekend she pronounced to Annie (who left an hour after the parents did and returned 3 hours before they came back as to give the impression she was there the entire time) that she peed her pants over the weekend (2 times, both on me) and she "...wasn't sorry".
Nice.
Thanks Rachel. I had a great and exhausting time. Next time our parents go out for the weekend I'll need to get a B12 shot before coming over. Or I could just use your Epi-Pen junior.
Things Jessie Learned This Weekend With Rachel:
- She's adorable at 6AM
- She's not so adorable at 6:30AM when she tells you she's hungry
- Never believe her when she says "Trust me, Jessie"
- Her timidness about getting her hands dirty with finger paint is a ruse to lull you into complacency so she can lunge at you with tiny paint covered hands
- For the love of all that is holy, don't leave the house without Cheerios
- Watching the same movie over and over again is very soothing
- "The Land Before Time" movie has been ruined as it is on it's 15th sequel, somewhere Little Foot is weeping
- She's precious
- Dora is the devil
- Rachel's pretty
- When trying to feed Rachel, bacon always trumps fruit
- While bribes undermine the discipline her parents taught her...they work so well
- Any other small child is an instant new friend, even if the other child is afraid of the very forward Rachel
- Monkey bars are aptly named
- When travelling add on 60 minutes to accomodate for a child (they take very small steps)
- When travelling with a child you must realize they require you pack for an expedition-like excursion
- I love her

A Whirlwind Weekend

Late last night the Rodgers got back from our weekend in Toronto, to say the least.
